Schreiben Teil 2 B1 – How to Express Your Opinion Perfectly

Successfully passing the Schreiben B1 exam isn’t always simple. The test, which consists of 3 parts, requires a fairly high level to validate this module.

And the bane of German language learners in Cameroon is Teil 2.

If that’s also the case for you, then rest assured—this article will give you plenty of ideas to master the basics of the Schreiben module.

Let’s go! Los geht’s!

What Exactly Is Schreiben B1 Teil 2?

It’s simply an exercise designed to assess your ability to argue, to express a point of view, and to defend it properly.

Concretely, an opinion expressed by a person on a theme is presented to us. It could be about “Handy in der Schule” (Mobile phones in school).

The person has expressed their position on this topic, and we are asked in turn to express ourselves.

The majority of language school learners in Cameroon find this exercise complex because they don’t know whether they should simply agree with the person who expressed their opinion or contradict them.

So what exactly should you do?

Don’t panic! Here are the secret structures that I use to get the maximum points to validate Schreiben B1 Teil 2 (and which all German teachers agree on).

Understanding Schreiben B1 Teil 2 Format

The Schreiben Teil 2 of the Goethe Zertifikat B1 is an argumentative writing task where you respond to someone’s opinion on a blog or forum. This section tests your ability to:

  • Express your opinion clearly (agree or disagree)
  • Provide solid arguments to support your position
  • Structure your response logically and coherently
  • Use formal language appropriately (Sie form)
  • Write approximately 80 words

Key Characteristics of Schreiben B1 Teil 2

Format: Formal comment/response to an opinion (Meinungsäußerung)

Time limit: Part of the 30-minute writing section

Word count: Approximately 80 words

Task type: Express and defend your opinion on a given topic

Form of address: Formal or can be omitted (unlike Teil 1)

Structure: 4 essential parts

The 4 Essential Parts of Schreiben B1 Teil 2

This exercise has 4 parts to complete:

  1. Die Einleitung (The Introduction)
  2. Die Meinung (The Opinion)
  3. Die Begründung (The Justification)
  4. Der Schluss (The Conclusion)

Let’s explore each part in detail with proven structures and examples.

Part 1: Die Einleitung (The Introduction) — Schreiben B1 Teil 2

To introduce a topic in Teil 2 of the Schreiben Zertifikat B1, there are multiple ways, but I’ll give you 3 highly effective structures:

Structure 1: The “Two Sides of the Coin” Introduction

“Es wird viel über Vor- und Nachteile von … (the topic) diskutiert. Aber jede Medaille hat bekanntlich zwei Seiten.”

“There is much discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of… (the topic). But every coin has two sides, as everyone knows.”

Example with “Handy in der Schule” (Mobile Phones in School):

Es wird viel über Vor- und Nachteile von dem Handy in der Schule diskutiert. Aber jede Medaille hat bekanntlich zwei Seiten.

There is much discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones in school. But every coin has two sides, as everyone knows.

Structure 2: The “Important Topic” Introduction

“Ich möchte in diesem Blog auch etwas zum Thema… (insert the topic) schreiben, weil ich dieses Thema wichtig finde.”

“I would also like to write something on this blog about the topic of… (insert topic), because I find this topic important.”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Ich möchte in diesem Blog auch etwas zum Thema “Handy in der Schule” schreiben, weil ich dieses Thema wichtig finde.

I would also like to write something on this blog about the topic of “mobile phones in school” because I find this topic important.

Structure 3: The “Express My Opinion” Introduction

“Das Thema… (the topic) finde ich wichtig, deswegen möchte ich meine Meinung dazu äußern.”

“I find the topic of… (the topic) important, therefore I would like to express my opinion about it.”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Das Thema “Handy in der Schule” finde ich wichtig, deswegen möchte ich meine Meinung dazu äußern.

I find the topic of “mobile phones in school” important, therefore I would like to express my opinion about it.

Part 2: Die Meinung (Expressing Your Opinion) — Schreiben B1 Teil 2

Here we have two types of opinions:

  • 2a: We agree with the opinion given in the exam (same direction)
  • 2b: We disagree with the opinion given in the exam (opposite direction)

2a: Agreeing with the Opinion (Going in the Same Direction)

When you want to express an opinion that agrees with the one in the exam, it’s possible to use the following 3 structures that have already proven their worth:

Agreement Structure 1: “Ich bin völlig der Meinung”

“Ich bin völlig der Meinung von… (the name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion), dass… (you say what you think, in the same direction as them, of course).”

“I completely agree with… (person’s name) that… (your supporting statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Ich bin völlig der Meinung von Roland, dass Handy in der Schule erlaubt werden muss.

I completely agree with Roland that mobile phones must be allowed in school.

Agreement Structure 2: “Hat Recht”

“(The name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion) hat recht, dass… (you say what you think, in the same direction as them, of course).”

“(Person’s name) is right that… (your supporting statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Roland hat recht, dass Handy in der Schule erlaubt werden muss.

Roland is right that mobile phones must be allowed in school.

Agreement Structure 3: “Ich stimme zu”

“Ich stimme… (the name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion) zu, dass… (you say what you think, going in the same direction as them, of course).”

“I agree with… (person’s name) that… (your supporting statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Ich stimme Roland zu, dass Handy in der Schule erlaubt werden muss.

I agree with Roland that mobile phones must be allowed in school.

Additional Redemittel for Agreeing:

  • Ich teile die Meinung von…I share the opinion of…
  • Ich bin derselben/gleichen Meinung wie…I am of the same opinion as…
  • Ich finde auch, dass…I also think that…
  • Ich denke genauso wie…I think exactly like…

2b: Disagreeing with the Opinion (Going in the Opposite Direction)

To go in the opposite direction from the one proposed in the exam, I’ll also give you the 3 best ways to express your opinion:

Disagreement Structure 1: “Im Gegensatz zu”

“Im Gegensatz zu… (the name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion), bin ich der Meinung, dass… (you say what you think, in the opposite direction to theirs, of course).”

“In contrast to… (person’s name), I am of the opinion that… (your opposing statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Im Gegensatz zu Roland bin ich der Meinung, dass Handy in der Schule nicht erlaubt werden muss.

In contrast to Roland, I am of the opinion that mobile phones should not be allowed in school.

Disagreement Structure 2: “Ich bin nicht ganz der Meinung”

“Ich bin nicht ganz der Meinung von… (the name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion), denn… (you say what you think, in the opposite direction to theirs, of course).”

“I don’t quite agree with… (person’s name) because… (your opposing statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Ich bin nicht ganz der Meinung von Roland, denn Handy muss nicht in der Schule erlaubt werden.

I don’t quite agree with Roland because mobile phones should not be allowed in school.

Disagreement Structure 3: “Ich vertrete nicht den Standpunkt”

“Ich vertrete nicht den Standpunkt von… (the name of the person written in the exam who wrote their opinion), weil… (you say what you think, in the opposite direction to theirs, of course).”

“I don’t share the position of… (person’s name) because… (your opposing statement).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Ich vertrete nicht den Standpunkt von Roland, weil Handy in der Schule nicht erlaubt werden muss.

I don’t share Roland’s position because mobile phones should not be allowed in school.

Additional Redemittel for Disagreeing:

  • Ich bin anderer Meinung als…I have a different opinion than…
  • Ich sehe das anders als…I see that differently than…
  • Ich kann … nicht zustimmenI cannot agree with…
  • Meiner Meinung nach ist das nicht richtig, denn…In my opinion that’s not right because…

Part 3: Die Begründung (The Justification) — Schreiben B1 Teil 2

There are really different ways to justify your point of view, whether in German or French, but here I’ll give you the 3 best ones I know:

Justification Structure 1: “Eigentlich finde ich”

“Eigentlich finde ich (the topic) ganz normal / nicht so gut, weil… (you give your justification).”

“Actually, I find (the topic) quite normal / not so good, because… (your justification).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Pro-Argument:
Eigentlich finde ich Handy in der Schule ganz normal, weil die Schüler damit unterschiedliche Recherchen machen können.

Actually, I find mobile phones in school quite normal because students can do various research with them.

Contra-Argument:
Eigentlich finde ich Handy in der Schule nicht so gut, weil die Schüler damit nicht mehr konzentriert sein werden.

Actually, I don’t find mobile phones in school so good because students won’t be concentrated anymore.

Justification Structure 2: “Mit… kann/können”

“Mit (the topic) kann/können… (you give your justification).”

“With (the topic) one can… (your justification).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Mit Handy in der Schule können Lehrer auch nicht mehr konzentriert werden und deswegen werden die Schüler faul.

With mobile phones in school, teachers can also no longer be concentrated and therefore students will become lazy.

Justification Structure 3: “Es entsteht viele Folgen”

“Es entstehen viele Folgen, denn… (you give your justification).”

“Many consequences arise because… (your justification).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Es entstehen viele Folgen, denn die Schüler werden nicht mehr auch ihre Lektionen lernen und der Kurs wird mal anders laufen, weil alle Personen in der Schule abgelenkt sind.

Many consequences arise because students will no longer learn their lessons and the course will run differently because everyone in the school is distracted.

Essential Redemittel for Begründung (Justification):

Connecting Words for Arguments:

Weil Because (sends verb to end)
Denn Because (normal word order)
Deshalb Therefore
Deswegen That’s why
Darum For that reason
Außerdem Moreover/Besides
Darüber hinaus Furthermore
Zudem In addition

Part 4: Der Schluss (The Conclusion) — Schreiben B1 Teil 2

This is the last step, the easiest and least complicated, because we’re just closing our presentation with a short concluding sentence in which we always support our point of view and give a small piece of advice.

As usual, I’ll give you the 3 best ways to finish a Schreiben B1 Teil 2 beautifully:

Conclusion Structure 1: “Zum Schluss möchte ich nur betonen”

“Zum Schluss möchte ich nur betonen, dass… (you support your opinion again and give a small piece of advice regarding the topic).”

“In conclusion, I would just like to emphasize that… (restate opinion + advice).”

Examples with “Handy in der Schule”:

Pro-Conclusion:
Zum Schluss möchte ich nur betonen, dass Handy in der Schule erlaubt werden muss, denn unsere Welt hat sich entwickelt und Handy kann Schulleistungen erhöhen.

In conclusion, I would just like to emphasize that mobile phones must be allowed in school because our world has evolved and mobile phones can increase school performance.

Contra-Conclusion:
Zum Schluss möchte ich nur betonen, dass Handy in der Schule nicht erlaubt werden muss, denn es stört einfach viel und lenkt auch zu sehr ab.

In conclusion, I would just like to emphasize that mobile phones should not be allowed in school because they simply disturb a lot and are too distracting.

Conclusion Structure 2: “Schließlich bin ich total”

“Schließlich bin ich total (dafür/dagegen), (you support your opinion again and give a small piece of advice regarding the topic).”

“Finally, I am totally for/against it, (restate opinion + advice).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Schließlich bin ich total dagegen, denn wir müssen Schüler vor solchen Ablenkungen während ihres Studiums schützen, damit sie bessere Schulleistungen bekommen können.

Finally, I am totally against it because we must protect students from such distractions during their studies so that they can achieve better school performance.

Conclusion Structure 3: “Aus diesem Grund denke ich”

“Aus diesem Grund denke ich, dass… (you support your opinion again and give a small piece of advice regarding the topic).”

“For this reason, I think that… (restate opinion + advice).”

Example with “Handy in der Schule”:

Aus diesem Grund denke ich, dass man Handy in der Schule verbieten muss und man kann auch eher Computer den Schülern zur Verfügung stellen, damit sie auch neue Kenntnisse bekommen, anstatt Handy in Schulsystem zu integrieren.

For this reason, I think that mobile phones must be banned in school and computers can rather be made available to students so that they can also gain new knowledge instead of integrating mobile phones into the school system.

Additional Redemittel for Schluss (Conclusion):

  • Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass…In summary, one can say that…
  • Abschließend möchte ich sagen, dass…In conclusion, I would like to say that…
  • Meiner Meinung nach sollte man…In my opinion, one should…
  • Ich bin der Ansicht, dass…I am of the view that…

Tips for Maximizing Your Score in Schreiben B1 Teil 2

🎯 Expert Strategies:

1. Always Follow the 4-Part Structure

Never skip any part. Einleitung → Meinung → Begründung → Schluss is mandatory.

2. Make Your Position Crystal Clear

Within the first two sentences, the examiner should know whether you agree or disagree. Don’t be ambiguous.

3. Provide 2-3 Strong Arguments

Quality over quantity. Two well-developed arguments are better than four weak ones.

4. Use Connecting Words Generously

Words like weil, denn, deshalb, außerdem, zudem show your command of German sentence structure.

5. Don’t Just Repeat

In your Schluss, restate your opinion using different words than in your Meinung section.

6. Add a Recommendation or Advice

In your conclusion, suggest what should be done. Use sollte man…, muss man…, kann man…

7. Maintain Formal Tone

Avoid colloquial expressions. Use formal structures even though you can omit the Anrede.

8. Practice Both Sides

For every topic, practice writing both agreeing AND disagreeing responses. You need flexibility.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Schreiben B1 Teil 2

❌ Critical Errors to Avoid:

1. Unclear Opinion

Wrong: “Both sides have good points…”
Right: Take a clear position—agree OR disagree completely.

2. No Introduction

Wrong: Starting directly with “I agree with Roland…”
Right: Always begin with a proper Einleitung introducing the topic.

3. Insufficient Justification

Wrong: “I think mobile phones are bad in school.”
Right: “I think mobile phones are bad in school because they distract students and teachers cannot concentrate…”

4. Missing Conclusion

Wrong: Ending after the Begründung without a Schluss
Right: Always close with a concluding statement that restates your opinion.

5. Too Short or Too Long

Wrong: 50 words or 120 words
Right: Aim for 80-90 words total.

6. Using “du” Form

Wrong: “Ich stimme dir zu…”
Right: Use formal structures or no direct address at all: “Ich stimme Roland zu…”

7. Grammar Catastrophes

Watch out for verb position after weil (verb goes to end!) and denn (normal word order).

Frequently Asked Questions About Schreiben B1 Teil 2

Q: Do I have to agree or disagree? Can I present both sides?

A: You must take a clear position—either agree OR disagree. Don’t try to present both sides equally. The exam wants to see that you can defend ONE position convincingly.

Q: Should I use “du” or “Sie” when referring to the person whose opinion I’m responding to?

A: You typically don’t address them directly. Use their name: “Ich stimme Roland zu…” or “Im Gegensatz zu Maria…” This avoids the du/Sie issue entirely.

Q: How many arguments do I need to provide?

A: 2-3 well-developed arguments are ideal. With only 80 words, you can’t write 5 arguments in depth.

Q: Can I invent statistics or facts to support my argument?

A: Yes, but keep it general and reasonable. Don’t invent specific studies. General statements like “many experts say…” or “studies show…” are fine.

Q: What if I don’t have a strong opinion on the topic?

A: Choose whichever side seems easier to argue for. This is a language test, not a test of your personal beliefs. Pick the side where you know more vocabulary.

Q: Do I need a greeting or closing signature?

A: No. Unlike Teil 1, Teil 2 doesn’t require “Liebe Grüße” or a signature. Just end with your conclusion.

Q: What’s the difference between “weil” and “denn”?

A: Both mean “because” but affect word order differently:
Weil: verb goes to the end → “…, weil ich das Thema wichtig finde.”
Denn: normal word order → “…, denn ich finde das Thema wichtig.”
